Return to School:   We have nearly completed our first month back and it has been a great success thus far. There are undoubted challenges in teaching the classes under the current restrictions but staff and pupils are adapting all the time and we are incredibly relieved to be back face to face as opposed to virtually. The children have demonstrated how they have the remarkable ability to just get on with things and it has been a month of re-establishing the routines of school. There is a lot of catch up work to be done and we will look to do this steadily with pupils, both individually and collectively over the coming months. I would really like to thank all the parents who have been so patient with what we have asked you and your children to do in terms of coming to and leaving school. It reminds us of how lucky we are to work in such a fantastic community and we hope that we can carry on as we have done so far over the coming months.

Thankfully we have not had any positive cases of Covid 19 in the school but we have attached a detailed letter which goes through procedures again in the case of this happening. We hope this will be useful to you. We would also ask you to fill in the HSA form on our website when a pupil is returning to the school.

Yard:   The class bubbles all have their own section on the yard in which they are required to play. The 6th class are currently on the field and we may in the future have other classes there. We are lucky to have the space to accommodate all the class bubbles at break time. If your child is on the grass football pitch, as stated before in our earlier newsletter, they can bring in spare footwear and socks to change into, and we recommend that they do so.

Homework:   I’m sure all of us enjoyed having September without any homework. It is however an important part of school life providing parents at home an opportunity to see what their child is doing in class and how they are progressing. It also allows for revision and increased independence. We will be starting homework again this week. For the first few days we will be doing reading and spelling. It is critical that children are heard reading aloud each day. We will introduce some writing from next week. The homework we give is in accordance with our homework policy, which is available on the school website, and should not exceed the timeframes we suggest. If it does, please contact the class teacher.

Meetings:   The annual Parent Teacher meetings are due to be held in November. In what guise they take place will depend on the public health advice at the time. If you have any concern with regard to your child, the first port of call should be a call to the office to speak with the class teacher or a note to them. They will be more than happy to address your concern when they are not in class.

Parents Association AGM:   We are examining ways in which this might take place in the near future with online, or taking place outdoors, being some possibilities we are looking at. We will be in contact in the near future.

School Lunches:   I would like to complement all on the quality of the lunches that children have. Lunchboxes are full of fruit, veg, and healthy sandwiches!!

Cycling to School:  It has been fantastic to see our ever growing cycling group coming to and from school each day while the weather has been fine. The new road works have made it safer for pupils to take their bikes out. I would ask all motorists to be aware of their presence on the road at all times and to give them all necessary consideration.

First Holy Communion/Confirmation:

We have received a date for Communion next year. It will take place – all going well – on Saturday May 8th. The first preparation Masses take place over the next number of weeks. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the generosity of the whole school community in supporting this initiative for our new play area. We are also very grateful for the amazing support that our local businesses have given. We have attached a list of the businesses that have thus far donated money towards the project. Their willingness to help out our school financially demonstrates a fantastic sense of community.  We hope that you in return to will continue to support them

We urge all parents to please turn up on the night and support this event.  Representatives of many of our sponsoring companies will be present at the race night and it is important that their generosity towards your children is acknowledged by a strong turn-out from Parents.  We need your support to ensure the success of the event.  We would again like to remind you that this is a once-off event night and the first we have had in over 25 years.  There is no admission charge on the night, so please come along, enjoy the night, and show your support.  It would be greatly appreciated.

School Building:   As I’m sure many of you have seen, the building of our new classroom has commenced and should be in place for the start of the new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and pupils of the school for cooperating with not being on the school premises before 9:10am.

Standardised Tests:   The dates for the standardised tests are as follows:

English: May 27th – 30th. Maths: June 4th – 7th. These are important tests and it can be disruptive to all if pupils miss out on these tests and have to catch up at a later date.  If you know your child will be absent during any either of these weeks, we would appreciate it if you could let us know as soon as possible.

Swimming:  We have one more session of swimming next week.

Football/Soccer: Our girls football team will start training Tuesday 9th April at 3.30pm in Kingscourt pitch. Benny is currently with 5th and 6th class. Well done to the three teams who performed superbly at the County Soccer Blitz yesterday.
