Laragh 2 Muff N.S. Newsletter March 2019

School Building:   We hope to commence building of the school this Friday when the school is closed. When construction is taking place, there will be an obvious impact on the school in terms of parking and noise. The health and safety of all staff, pupils and visitors is the primary concern. So again we would remind parents that children should not be left at the school before 9:10 when supervision is provided. We appreciate your cooperation with this matter.

Fundraising:   Our Camel Race Night takes place on Saturday April 13th in Murtagh’s Bar. I would appreciate if all cards could be returned by Thursday March 21st. There is more information on both our school website and the Facebook page “Muff N.S. Play Area.”

Closures:   We would remind parents/guardians that the school is closed this Friday the 15th of March and again on Monday for the St. Patrick’s Day Holiday. We are also closed on Friday March 22nd for a staff planning day on the new Language Curriculum.

Sport:   Well done to Michael McKeon and Charlie McCormack on their efforts in the recent All Ireland Handball Competition. The boys were representing Ulster in the finals and played outstandingly in a top class competition held in the brilliant facilities of Kingscourt Handball Club. Many thanks to Brendan and all those who helped out. It was a fantastic day for all involved.

Swimming will continue this month for all pupils from 1st – 6th class. Brendan is continuing his coaching with Ms. Marron’s and Mr Byrne’s class.

Seachtain na Gaeilge:   This is taking place all this week. We will have our annual “Seó sa Halla” on Thursday. We would encourage you to engage your child in cúpla focail during the week. The emphasis in our school is on using as much spoken Irish, in as many situations, as possible and, of course, in enjoying using the language.

Board of Management:   There is a meeting this Tuesday at 8:30 in the school. The agreed report to parents is available on the school website.

Mighty Mouth:  Pupils in Ms McNally’s and Ms Marron’s room have been taking part in the “Mighty Mouth” programme for the past few weeks. There is an award ceremony this Wednesday at 1.30pm, where they will receive a certificate for all their hard work.  Parents are invited to attend.

Grandparents Day:   We would like to express our appreciation to all the grandparents and parents who came to the school for our Grandparent Day celebration. It was a wonderful occasion for the pupils to be involved in and their mini-assignments, involving bringing in old and interesting items, were a big hit with the grandparents. Many thanks to Gillian and Alison who helped out on the day and to Fr. Gerry who conducted the service.

Fundraising Committee:   We had a very productive first meeting last week with regard to our fundraising drive to pay for a new play area for the children. There will be a further meeting this Wednesday at 7:30 to finalise arrangements for the opening fundraiser. Again all are welcome to the meeting and all help would be hugely appreciated when it comes to running and supporting the actual fundraiser. There will further information given out following our meeting this Wednesday.

Building:   Construction of the new classroom is due to begin next month. The building is due to be completed before the start of the next academic year. The building itself will obviously have disruption associated with it that the Board of Management and staff will plan around, to minimise the effects on pupils learning.

Green Flag:   We are having the inspection for our next Green Flag in the coming week or so. Our Green School Committee is hard at work preparing for this and our classes have completed a number of activities all around the theme of water and water conservation.

School Self Evaluation:   We are carrying on with our work with regard to spelling while also reminding the pupils to use their spoken Irish throughout the day.

Child Protection:   We are reviewing the school’s SPHE policy which will be ratified by the Board in the coming weeks. This is an integral part of the school’s Child Safeguarding Procedures.

Credit Union Quiz:   The Credit Union quiz took part in Kingscourt Community Centre yesterday. Well done to our Senior Team of Darragh Farrelly, Daniel Putnam, Mark Lennon and Niall Gogarty, who finished in 4th place after a tie-break round.  Our Junior team of Oisín Monaghan, Oscar Monaghan, Daniel Morris & Logan Kierans finished in 3rd place after a tie-break for 2nd place. Super performance by both teams!

Sport:   Our handball squad is going to the County Championships this week. Brendan is returning to coaching on Friday of this week. He will coach Ms. Marron’s and Mr Byrne’s classes.

Attendance:   Our school attendance is generally very good with a large number of pupils having missed no days. If the child is sick they should be kept at home. If the child is absent a written note must be provided for the school.
