March Newsletter

Laragh 2 Muff N.S. Newsletter March 2020

Sacramental Classes:   The next Preparation Mass for the 2nd and 6th class is Saturday March 21st at 7:30 pm in Muff Church. The Annual Retreat for the Confirmation pupils will be on Thursday March 23rd. Darren Butler will be hosting this event. He will then be guest speaker at the last Preparatory Mass. All Confirmation pupils are asked to invite their sponsor with them to this Mass. Confirmation takes place on Sunday May 10th at 3pm in Kingscourt Church. First Holy Communion will take place on Saturday May 16th 10am in Muff Church.

Health/Hygiene:   The HSE and the Department of Education have been in contact with all schools with regard to the current health situation. They will advise all schools in matters going forward. From a school point of view, it has provided an opportunity to remind the pupils of the importance of washing hands and carrying with them their own tissues–basic hygiene recommendations that we reinforce constantly with our students each and every year.

SPHE:   The Social Personal and Health Education policy is available to look at on our website. This subject is taught to all classes throughout the school year. It covers a wide area of topics under the strands of Myself, Myself and Others and Myself and the Wider World.

Under the SPHE umbrella, the Stay Safe Programme is taught to all classes every year. This is a critical part of educating and informing children about a wide variety of child protection issues from bullying to keeping safe, internet safety and matters of inappropriate interactions with adults. We will be beginning this part of SPHE over the coming weeks and it will continue right up until June. In 6th class we will be continuing to engage with the Relationship and Sexuality Programme (R.S.E.). This year, class teachers will carry out the full programme and there will be no outside agency invited in to talk to the pupils.

Each class also directly or indirectly, addresses the topic of bullying. We emphasise the importance of inclusion, respect for all and treating people as they would like to be treated which is a central part of our school ethos. We also discuss resilience and the ability to take minor setbacks, incidents or disagreements as a part of life. Coping with, and using strategies to overcome these, is central to a pupil’s development. All of these skills are taught at age appropriate levels.

Finally it also engages the pupils in the whole area of self–care in terms of diet, water safety, the environment around us etc. These all feed into the same area of well–being which is a term we hear more and more of. The subject is one that very much teaches life-long skills and attributes that we hope all our pupils will use long into the future.

Parent/Teacher Meetings:   The 6th class will receive their Mid Term Self Evaluation Reports later this week. We would ask all parents to have a good look at them and have a conversation about them with their child. The end of year reports are handed out in late June. If there is any issue with your child that you feel you need addressed then you should contact the class teacher via the school office or by a written note to make an appointment to see the teacher. Once contact has been made, we will schedule a meeting for the parent to meet the teacher. This is the appropriate and agreed way for issues to be discussed per the School Code of Behaviour.

Opening of New Play Area:   We have had to change the date for the official opening of our new play area. It will now take place on Friday the 3rd of April at 10:00am. Please note that this is the day of the Easter Break. We will give out more information closer to the time.

Quiz Teams:   Well done to all the quiz teams who participated in the recent Cumann na mBunscol quiz in Cavan. There were over a hundred tables at the quiz and the teams performed admirably.

Gyproc Saint Gobain Donation of Laptops:   We would like to take this opportunity to thank Gyproc Saint Gobain for the donation of a brand new laptop computer for each class room. This very generous donation will be of huge benefit for classes in that it will allow students to conduct more independent work and research. It will also allow for students to look up areas of interest. Many thanks to the parents who helped organise this and once again, our sincerest thanks to Gyproc Saint Gobain.

Debating Team:   Our Debating Team under Ms. Quinn has had an outstanding season reaching the County Final last week, which was held in Monaghan. The motion in the final was, “We’re not doing enough to reduce food waste”. The team were brilliant on the day and were very unlucky to miss out in a very tight contest. Our speakers Reece, Mairéad, Sophie, Orlaith, Daniel and Niall represented our school admirably and were supported excellently by all in 6th class. The skills and confidence they acquired should be of great benefit to them in the future.

Seachtain na Gaeilge:   Our annual Seachtain na Gaeilge takes place next week. We would encourage all to use their cúpla focail in the coming weeks and listen to their children doing so.

Lego Workshops:   Our recent workshops went extremely well and the children enjoyed the engineering aspect of the activity.

Sport:   Swimming lessons are going very well. Kells Pool is newly refurbished and provides an excellent amenity for the students.

Brendan McCormack is continuing to coach individual classes in the school.

Best of luck to Charlie McCormack and Luke Madden in their All Ireland Handball Competition this Saturday in Kingscourt. They succeeded in getting there after victory in the Ulster Championships earlier this month – in itself a fantastic achievement.
