Laragh 2 Muff N.S. Newsletter February Mid-Term 2019

Handball:   Our Handball squad under the tutelage of Brendan has had huge success over the last couple of weeks. John McKeon won silver in the Cavan County Championships in the singles competitions. Our Junior Doubles team of Daithí Yore and Michael Putnam and our Senior Doubles team of Michael McKeon and Charlie McCormack both won gold and qualified for the Ulster Championship. Daithí and Michael won two out of four games here. Michael and Charlie qualified for the final, where they beat Monaghan and have now qualified for the All Ireland Tournament, in two weeks, which is being held in Kingscourt. Well done to all, and many thanks to Brendan and others who helped with lifts etc.

First Penance:   The ceremony takes place on Wednesday at 2pm in Muff Church. All parents of 2nd class pupils have received a note from Ms. Farrelly.

School Building:   We are hoping to start the build of the new classroom in early March. Once we have received confirmation a note will go out to parents about it. While we are delighted that building is imminent, it will have a fairly significant impact on the school while construction is on-going. There will be vehicles coming in and out of the school grounds, materials being transferred etc. Therefore we would ask parents again not to drop their children at school before 9:10 as school policy has always stated that no supervision is provided in our school up until this point or until the arrival of the school bus which is usually after this time. There are obvious health and safety concerns with pupils arriving well before this time when building is going on.

Quizzes:   Well done to our Credit Union Quiz teams who performed tremendously well in the recent competition in Kingscourt. Our Junior team of Oisín & Oscar Monaghan, Daniel Morris & Logan Kierans tied for second and ended up third while our senior team of Daniel Putnam, Mark Lennon, Niall Gogarty & Darragh Farrelly finished a point behind the winners in a tie for third and were placed. Three teams are taking part in the Cumann na mBunscol quiz on Tuesday in the Kilmore Hotel in Cavan.

Green Flag:   Well done to Ms. McNally and our Green School Committee who had their Green Flag Assessment from Cavan County Council last week. The day went extremely well and we hope to hear the results from the council in the coming weeks.

Swimming:   Swimming will start for the school on Monday 4th March. 1st, 2nd, 3rd   and Ms Campbell’s 4th classes will go for the first 6 weeks. Once again a note will be given out closer to the time.  Aquatics are an essential part of the P.E. Curriculum and all pupils are expected to attend all session. If there are any issues, please let the school know beforehand.

Parents Association: Many thanks to the Parent Association and all who supported the Church Collection this weekend.

Debating:   Well done to Reece O’Reilly, Helena Reilly & Niall Gogarty in Ms. Quinn’s 4th and 5th  class who participated in their second debate of the year with Aughadreena N.S. It took place in our school and once again the class produced a terrific display.

Spelling Bee:   Well done to John McKeon who won the Annual Spelling Bee competition in the school. He now goes on to the County Spelling Bee later in the year.
